Shopping and traveling are two of Mona Walsh’s (’82) favorite things to do. That’s why, when the Long Island native and Connecticut resident was offered a job at Tanger Outlet Centers in Greensboro, North Carolina earlier this year, it was a no-brainer to accept. “Tanger Outlets is a great company where we have the opportunity to keep up with fashion trends a season or two ahead,” says Mona. “It’s one of the perks of working here!”
Soon after moving and starting her job, she was promoted to Assistant Vice President, Corporate Communications, where she now oversees Tanger's investor relations, public relations, and corporate communications activities. Her most recent project consists of coordinating the company’s “Hard Hat Tour,” which is a showcase of a new shopping center prior to its completion. The new center, which opens in November, will create about 800 jobs. “I’m excited to be a part of this expansion project that will allow for so many people to work. Everyone at the company is really looking forward to it,” she says.
As a Business Administration major at Sacred Heart, her education gave her vital life and business skills upon which she builds every day. “I couldn’t have gotten to where I am now without Sacred Heart. Its convenience and understanding allowed me to earn a valuable education while working,” she says.
Mona, who was a commuter during her two years at Sacred Heart, appreciated the school’s curriculum and accreditation. “Even with only an Associate’s Degree from Sacred Heart, I had the confidence I needed to start my career.”
Amidst graduating and getting married—on the same day—in 1982, she broke into management at Playtex as a Human Resources professional. Over the years, she was employed by a venture capital company in Connecticut and then starting working for Wolfe Axelrod Weinberger, a small investor relations agency, where she “learned about financial communications from the pros.” From there, she went on to large PR firms like Edelman and Ogilvy, and even ran her own communications consulting business in 2009. Once she met the management team at Tanger later that year, “the rest was history.”
With such an eclectic background, what does Mona think will be next for her? “I want to continue building and growing my career at Tanger. I’m doing what I love with a terrific company,” she says. “I’m also excited about exploring North Carolina and more of the southeast!”
